Itchy Diaper Rash: What to Know

Wetness, stool, urine, rubbing, and fragranced wipes can damage the delicate skin under a nappy. A rash that involves the folds, looks shiny or intensely red, or has small nearby spots may need assessment for yeast. New foods, diarrhoea, antibiotics, or a change in products can also alter the pattern. A clinician considers the baby’s age, comfort, skin surface, and general health rather than judging the colour alone.

Change nappies promptly, rinse with lukewarm water or use a fragrance-free wipe, and pat rather than rub. Allow brief air exposure when practical and use a protective barrier recommended for the child. Avoid talc, perfumed products, scrubbing, and steroid or antifungal medicines unless a clinician advises them. Emollient therapy may help protect dry irritated skin; topical antifungal treatment is used when a clinician identifies yeast as the cause.

Get prompt medical advice for fever, marked pain, blisters, pus, bleeding, open sores, rapidly spreading redness, or a baby who is unusually sleepy or feeding poorly. Arrange review when the rash is not settling, keeps returning, or extends beyond the nappy area.
