What should you know about itchy butt and groin?

Intertrigo develops where warm, moist skin rubs together and may cause redness, soreness, burning, or surface cracking. A skin yeast infection can produce itch and a red, moist rash, sometimes with small spots near the edge. Sweat, tight clothing, fragranced wipes, detergents, shaving, eczema, and psoriasis can also irritate these areas.

Look for clues such as a sharply bordered rash, scaling, odour, moist folds, discharge, sores, or symptoms after bowel movements. Itch around the anus can have additional causes, so avoid assuming that every groin or buttock rash is fungal.

Rinse gently, pat completely dry, and change out of damp clothing promptly. Wear loose breathable underwear, avoid fragranced products and vigorous rubbing, and do not share towels. Keep separate towels for the area while a contagious or infectious rash is being considered.

If a clinician identifies a fungal cause, topical antifungal treatment may be recommended for the specific site and diagnosis. Use medicines exactly as directed and avoid applying steroid creams to an undiagnosed groin rash, since they can alter its appearance or worsen some infections. A review is useful when the rash is recurrent or not settling.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, severe pain, fever, pus, open sores, tissue swelling, or difficulty passing urine or stool. Arrange an appointment for a rash that persists, returns often, affects the genitals, follows sexual exposure, or does not improve with gentle moisture control.

Ask whether the pattern fits intertrigo, a skin yeast infection, dermatitis, or another condition; whether a skin sample is needed; which products to avoid; and how long to use any topical treatment safely.
