Itchy burning eyes: what to know

Allergic conjunctivitis may cause itching, burning, watering, redness, and swollen lids. Allergic rhinitis can accompany it with sneezing or nasal symptoms. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are possible environmental triggers. Dry air, air conditioning, smoke, pool chemicals, cosmetics, and prolonged screen use can disturb the eye surface and create a gritty burn. Contact lenses may worsen irritation, particularly when worn during redness or discomfort. Pain, light sensitivity, sticky discharge, or reduced vision changes the level of concern and should not be dismissed as simple allergy.

Remove contact lenses and eye makeup, wash your hands, and avoid rubbing. A cool clean compress can settle itching; lubricating drops may help dryness when a pharmacist confirms they are suitable. Limit smoke, dust, fragrances, and other suspected triggers, and take regular breaks from screens. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s eye drops. If symptoms began after a chemical splash, rinse the eye with clean running water and seek urgent advice.

Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, sudden reduced vision, injury, a chemical exposure, strong light sensitivity, or a red eye with headache or vomiting. Contact-lens users need prompt assessment for pain, redness, or worsening sight. Arrange a review if burning persists, keeps returning, or produces thick discharge.
