Itchy bumps filled with clear liquid: treatment guide

Tiny deep blisters on the sides of fingers, palms, or soles can occur with dyshidrotic eczema and may later peel. A rash after contact with a product, glove, plant, or chemical can indicate contact dermatitis. Itchy scaling between the toes can occur with athlete's foot. Clear fluid does not identify one diagnosis, and scratching or popping blisters can damage the protective skin barrier.

Keep the area cool and dry, wash with a mild cleanser, and apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser to intact surrounding skin. Do not puncture blisters. Avoid the suspected new product and protect hands or feet from repeated wet work and friction. A clinician may recommend an anti-inflammatory treatment for eczema or contact dermatitis; an antifungal is appropriate only when a fungal condition is suspected. Seek medical advice if blisters are widespread, recurrent, very painful, infected-looking, or interfering with walking or using your hands. Prompt assessment is needed for pus, increasing warmth, red streaks, fever, facial or eye involvement, or blisters after a new medicine. Do not share towels if foot scaling or drainage is present.

Ask whether the pattern fits eczema, contact dermatitis, or fungal infection; whether a skin sample is needed; and which cream is safe on open skin. Tell the clinician where the bumps started, what touched the area, and whether they recur with heat or sweating.
