Itchy bumps around the anus: what to know

Sweat, friction, vigorous wiping, scented wipes, and soap can inflame the delicate skin. A red, moist rash that extends into nearby folds can occur with intertrigo, while a yeast rash may have small spots around its edge. A single tender lump can have a different cause from several itchy surface bumps. Scratching can break the skin and make burning or secondary infection more likely. Appearance alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and wear loose breathable underwear. Stop fragranced wipes, deodorants, and harsh cleansers in the area. Avoid scratching and do not squeeze or pierce the bumps. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable barrier product or topical antifungal treatment fits the pattern; do not apply steroid cream to broken skin or use combination creams without guidance. Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, keeps returning, or does not settle after removing irritants. Seek prompt care for severe pain, pus, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, open sores, bleeding, or a new lump that persists. Urgent assessment is sensible if pain is intense or sitting and passing stool become difficult.

Ask what pattern the bumps suggest, whether the skin needs examination for yeast or another infection, and which products are safe near the anus. Mention recent antibiotics, bowel changes, sweating, new wipes or detergents, sexual exposure, bleeding, and every cream already used.
