Itchy anus and groin: causes, care, and warning signs

Intertrigo can develop where skin rubs together and stays warm or damp. A Skin Yeast Infection may cause an itchy, red, moist rash in folds, sometimes with small spots near its edge. Irritation from soaps, wipes, laundry products, sweat, or tight clothing can affect the anal area and groin. Threadworms, haemorrhoids, fissures, and other conditions can also cause anal itching, so location alone is not enough to diagnose the cause.

Tell a clinician whether the itch is mainly around the anus, in the skin folds, or on the genitals. Burning, pain, bleeding, discharge, scaling, sores, or a rash that reaches the thighs are useful details. Avoid assuming that every groin itch is fungal.

Rinse with water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Change out of sweaty clothing, wear loose breathable underwear, and avoid perfumed wipes, deodorants, and harsh scrubbing. Keep towels personal and wash them regularly. Try not to scratch, because broken skin can become more inflamed or infected.

Book an appointment when symptoms persist, recur, or disturb sleep, or when the cause is unclear. Anal itching with a new lump, bowel change, or discharge also deserves assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
