What should you know about itchy and teary eyes?

Allergic Conjunctivitis can make both eyes itchy, watery and red, often alongside sneezing or a runny nose. Allergic Rhinitis, Pet Allergy and House Dust Mite Allergy may trigger this pattern after exposure to pollen, animals or indoor dust. Irritants such as smoke, cosmetics or contact-lens residue can cause a similar reaction. One-sided discharge, significant pain or light sensitivity is less typical of simple allergy and deserves medical review.

Do not rub your eyes, because rubbing can increase swelling and disturb the eye surface. Wash your hands, rinse away visible irritants with clean water, and use a cool clean compress. Pause contact lenses until the eyes feel normal. A pharmacist can explain whether Allergy Medication or lubricating drops are suitable; avoid sharing eye drops and do not use someone else’s prescription.

Get urgent help for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, an injury, chemical exposure, intense light sensitivity, or swelling that affects breathing. Arrange prompt assessment for thick discharge, a very red eye, symptoms in a contact-lens wearer, or symptoms that keep returning despite avoiding triggers. Do not drive if vision is blurred.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, irritation or infection, and whether your lenses, cosmetics or medicines could contribute. Share whether one or both eyes are affected, what the discharge looks like, and any change in vision or pain.
