What should you know about itchy and red eyes causes?

Allergic conjunctivitis often affects both eyes and may cause intense itch, watering, and redness after exposure to pollen, dust, or animal dander. Conjunctivitis can also be caused by infection and may bring sticky discharge, eyelids stuck together on waking, or a gritty sensation. Dry air, smoke, screen use, cosmetics, and contact lenses can irritate the eye surface. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, so note whether symptoms began suddenly, whether discharge is present, and whether other people around you are unwell.

Wash your hands before and after touching your eyes, avoid rubbing, and stop using eye makeup until the redness settles. A cool compress may calm itch; a clean warm compress can loosen crusting around the lids. Do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye drops. Remove contact lenses and seek advice before wearing them again. A pharmacist or clinician can help distinguish allergy from infection and select an appropriate treatment.

Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, or pain when moving the eye. Get prompt advice if redness is marked, discharge is heavy, or symptoms occur in a contact-lens wearer. Arrange review if redness persists, keeps returning, or does not improve after avoiding a suspected irritant.
