What should you know about itching whole body in pregnancy?

Short answer
Whole-body itching in pregnancy may come from dry skin or a pregnancy-related skin condition, but widespread itch deserves advice from your maternity team.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Record
- Note rash, timing, night-time severity, palms or soles, and fetal movements.
- Call promptly
- Widespread itch, particularly without a rash or with palm and sole involvement.
Why pregnancy can change itching
Skin stretching, warmth, sweating, and dryness can make the abdomen, breasts, arms, or legs itchy. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, hives, and other inflammatory conditions can also appear or flare during pregnancy, often with visible redness, bumps, or scaling. The pattern matters: itching that is widespread, severe, worse at night, or concentrated on the palms and soles may occur without an obvious rash and should be discussed promptly because pregnancy-related liver or bile-flow problems can present this way.
This symptom does not identify one cause by itself. Your maternity clinician may ask about the timing, rash, sleep, medicines, urine or stool changes, and fetal movements, then arrange examination or blood tests when appropriate.
Comfort measures and safe planning
Use a plain moisturiser several times a day, take lukewarm rather than hot showers, and wear loose cotton layers. Keep nails short and press or cool itchy areas instead of scratching. Avoid fragranced washes and new herbal or medicated products unless your maternity team approves them. Keep a note of where the itch occurs, whether a rash is present, how it affects sleep, and any new medicine or supplement. Do not self-treat widespread pregnancy itching with oral medicine without checking its suitability.
When to contact your maternity team
Contact your maternity team promptly for widespread or persistent itching, especially when the palms or soles itch, the itch is stronger at night, or there is little or no rash. Seek urgent maternity advice for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, feeling acutely unwell, or reduced fetal movement. Get emergency help for breathing trouble, facial swelling, or a rapidly blistering rash. Do not wait for a routine skin appointment when these warning signs occur.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a pregnancy-related liver or skin problem? Do I need blood tests or repeat testing? Which moisturisers or medicines are suitable at my stage of pregnancy? What changes in my symptoms or fetal movements should lead me to call immediately?

Questions people ask
Is whole-body itching in pregnancy always a skin problem?
No. Dryness and dermatitis are possible, but widespread itch without a rash can require maternity assessment for causes outside the skin.
Can I take an anti-itch tablet while pregnant?
Check with your maternity clinician or pharmacist first, because suitability depends on the medicine and your pregnancy.
