Itching rash around the genital area: what to know

Redness in a damp fold may be worsened by moisture and yeast. Dry scale or fissures can occur with eczema, while sharply defined plaques can occur with Psoriasis. Itching at night with bumps or affected close contacts may point toward Scabies. Lichen Planus can cause ongoing itchy or sore skin changes. Blisters, ulcers, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or urinary burning require a clinician to consider causes beyond simple irritation.

Rinse with lukewarm water, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser only where needed, and pat dry. Wear loose breathable underwear, change after exercise, and stop new products on the area. Do not douche or scrub inside the vagina. Avoid sex if it worsens pain or causes open skin, and do not share towels. A pharmacist can advise on suitable treatment, but diagnosis is especially useful for a first or recurrent rash.

Book an appointment if the rash lasts, returns, spreads, or does not improve after removing an obvious irritant. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, fever, blisters, ulcers, inability to urinate, or swelling of the face or throat. Tell the clinician about recent sexual exposure without embarrassment; it helps determine appropriate testing and treatment.

Ask whether the skin needs a swab, scraping, or other test; which products or medicines to stop; and how to prevent recurrence. Share the onset, exact location, discharge or urinary symptoms, recent antibiotics, hair removal, menstrual products, and sexual or household exposures.
