Itching Pills: What to Know

Oral antihistamines can reduce itch driven by histamine, such as hives, but they may not settle itch from dry skin, eczema, scabies, infection, or an internal condition. Some can cause sleepiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, or reduced alertness; others may be less sedating but still are not suitable for everyone. A clinician or pharmacist needs to consider age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney or liver problems, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, and other medicines.

Identify the cause before relying on tablets. Read the active ingredient and follow the package or prescribed directions; do not combine products with the same ingredient or add a sedating medicine to alcohol or activities requiring alertness. Keep tablets away from children. If the itch is localised, moisturising and removing an irritant may be more useful than a tablet. Ask a pharmacist before treating a child, pregnancy-related itch, or itch that began after a new medicine.

Do not use a tablet as a substitute for emergency care when itching comes with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek medical advice for a new widespread rash, blistering, fever, facial swelling, severe drowsiness, confusion, or itch that persists despite treatment. A new medicine may be the cause and should be reviewed promptly.
