Itching on the tummy during pregnancy

The growing abdomen can make skin tight and dry. Heat, sweat, elastic clothing, detergent and fragranced products can add irritation. Eczema or hives may cause visible itchy areas, while a fungal infection is more likely where moisture collects and the skin becomes sore or scaly. Itching without a clear rash, especially when widespread or concentrated on palms and soles, needs maternity assessment because the cause may not be on the skin. The symptom does not by itself diagnose a pregnancy complication.

Use a fragrance-free emollient regularly, take short lukewarm showers and wear loose breathable layers. A cool compress can be more comfortable than scratching; avoid applying ice directly. Ask promptly about dark urine, pale stools, yellow eyes or skin, or upper abdominal discomfort.
