Itching on the tummy in early pregnancy

Hormonal changes may make skin feel more sensitive, while soap, detergent, sweat, tight waistbands or a new product can irritate the abdomen. Dry, flaky skin can behave like eczema. A ring-shaped or moist rash, crusting, pain or tenderness suggests another process and should be examined. Early pregnancy does not make every itch pregnancy-related, and the location alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether the itch is local or widespread, whether a rash appeared first, and whether anyone else at home is itchy.

Pause newly introduced fragranced products, cleanse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry and apply a plain moisturiser. Choose loose cotton clothing and keep nails short to reduce skin injury from scratching. Do not start a medicated cream, antihistamine or supplement without checking its pregnancy suitability. Speak with your obstetric or primary-care clinician if itch is severe, widespread, persistent, keeps you awake, or comes with a rash that is changing. Seek prompt assessment for blisters, fever, facial swelling, breathing trouble, yellowing skin, dark urine, or pain and warmth that may indicate infection. If the itch is on the palms or soles or occurs without a visible rash, mention that specifically because it may change the evaluation.
