Itching on the stomach in pregnancy

As the abdomen expands, the skin can feel tight, dry, and irritated. Heat, sweating, fragranced products, and rough fabrics can add to the sensation. Itching without an obvious rash, especially when it affects the palms or soles or becomes widespread, should be discussed promptly with your maternity clinician because pregnancy-related causes outside the skin can also occur.

Use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser soon after a lukewarm wash, and reapply when the skin feels tight. Choose loose cotton clothing, keep the room cool, and use a cool damp cloth instead of scratching. Keep nails short to reduce skin damage. Do not start medicated creams, antihistamines, or herbal products in pregnancy without checking that they are suitable for you.

Contact your maternity team promptly if itching is intense, interferes with sleep, spreads beyond the stomach, has no rash, or involves the palms or soles. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering, fever, or rapidly worsening skin changes.
