Itching on the stomach after delivery: what to know

Skin that stretched during pregnancy may remain dry and sensitive while it settles. Itch can also follow shaving, surgical preparation, adhesive dressings, a caesarean dressing, or contact with a new wash or laundry product. A red, moist rash in a fold may be a Skin Yeast Infection. Raised welts may be Hives, while scaly patches can occur with eczema or Contact Dermatitis. Itching near an incision may be part of healing, but it should not be used to dismiss increasing tenderness or discharge.

Keep the skin clean and dry, and follow your maternity team’s instructions for any incision or dressing. Use a plain moisturiser on healed skin, not on an open wound or fresh incision. Wear soft, loose clothing and avoid fragranced products while the skin is reactive. Do not peel adhesive, scratch scabs, or apply steroid or antibiotic cream to a wound unless prescribed. Record whether the itch follows a dressing edge, a scar line, or a separate rash.

Contact your maternity or surgical team promptly if an incision becomes more red, hot, swollen, painful, or starts leaking fluid, blood, or pus. Seek urgent care for fever, feeling very unwell, wound separation, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, or a rapidly spreading rash. A generalised itch without a clear skin change also deserves clinical advice, especially if it is severe or worsening.

Is this itch located in normal healing skin or around a reaction to dressing or products? Is the incision healing as expected? Which moisturiser or medicine is safe while I recover and breastfeed, if relevant?
