Itching on pubic hair: possible causes and care

Shaving or waxing can irritate follicles and cause short-lived itch, bumps, or ingrown hairs. Fragranced washes, pads, lubricants, and laundry products may trigger Contact Dermatitis. Warm, moist skin can support a Skin Yeast Infection, often with redness and soreness. Scabies can cause intense night-time itch and may affect close contacts. Pubic itching is not enough to identify its cause, and genital discharge, pain, or ulcers may point to a problem needing sexual-health assessment.

Pause shaving, waxing, and fragranced products until the skin settles. Wash gently with lukewarm water, dry by patting, and wear breathable underwear that is not tight. Do not scratch, squeeze bumps, or apply antiseptic, steroid, or antifungal products inside the vagina or on broken skin unless advised. If a new product preceded the itch, stop it and record the timing. Avoid sexual contact if there are sores or unexplained discharge until assessed.

Arrange an examination for persistent itch, pus, painful lumps, cracked skin, bleeding, or a rash that extends beyond the hair-bearing area. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, fever, severe pain, or trouble passing urine. New genital sores or discharge, or a partner with symptoms, warrant a confidential sexual-health review.
