Itching on the hands in pregnancy: what to know

Frequent handwashing, sanitiser, detergents, cold air, and fragranced products can strip the skin barrier. Atopic Dermatitis may cause dry, inflamed, cracked patches; Contact Dermatitis often follows exposure to an irritant or allergen. Hives cause raised itchy areas that can come and go.

If the palms itch intensely but look normal, especially at night, tell the maternity team. They may assess you for pregnancy-related causes and ask about itch elsewhere, sleep, urine or eye colour, and fetal movement. The symptom does not establish a diagnosis on its own.

Use lukewarm water, a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick plain moisturiser after every wash. Wear protective gloves for wet household tasks, then dry carefully between the fingers. Keep nails short and use a cool cloth instead of scratching.

Check with your maternity clinician before using steroid creams, antihistamines, or other medicated products. Keep the packaging of any new soap, cream, glove, or cleaning product that preceded the flare.

Call your maternity team promptly for severe palm itching, itch without a rash, or symptoms that disturb sleep. Seek urgent advice for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. Emergency services are appropriate for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face and lips.

Ask whether your palms need pregnancy-related tests, which moisturiser or medicine is suitable, and whether your work or household exposures could be irritating the skin. Describe the timing, rash, sleep effect, and any symptoms outside the hands.
