What should you know about itching of throat and ears?

Seasonal allergies can make the throat, ear openings, and mouth feel itchy, sometimes with sneezing, watery eyes, or a runny nose. Viral irritation may bring a scratchy throat and congestion. Smoke, fragrances, dry air, or a new food can also trigger symptoms. Skin inflammation such as Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis may affect the outer ear, while throat symptoms require a broader assessment.

Move away from smoke or a suspected irritant, sip fluids, and avoid scratching inside the ears. Keep track of foods, medicines, products, and timing, especially when symptoms recur. Do not put objects or unprescribed drops into the ear. A clinician can assess the throat and ear and decide whether allergy treatment or another approach fits.

Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue, lips, or throat; wheezing; trouble breathing; faintness; or difficulty swallowing saliva. Seek prompt care for severe one-sided throat pain, fever with worsening illness, ear discharge, intense ear pain, dizziness, or new hearing loss. Symptoms after a food, medicine, or sting should be treated as potentially urgent.
