What should you know about itching of the eyes treatment?

Itching with watering and sneezing often follows an allergic trigger such as pollen, dust, or animal dander. Irritation can follow smoke, cosmetics, contact lenses, or dry air. Crusting at the lashes may point to eyelid inflammation. A skin condition such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, or Psoriasis can also affect the eyelids. Eye itching does not by itself establish the cause.

Wash your hands before touching the area, stop eye makeup and contact lenses while symptoms continue, and use a clean cool compress over closed eyes. Do not rub, share towels, or use someone else’s drops. A pharmacist or eye clinician can advise on an appropriate product; steroid eye drops need professional supervision.

Arrange urgent assessment for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, a severe headache with nausea, a chemical splash, or a red eye while wearing contact lenses. Emergency help is needed for sudden vision loss, major swelling, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Persistent or recurrent itching also deserves an examination.
