Itching Near the Eyes

New eye makeup, creams, cleansers, contact-lens solutions, hair products, or airborne allergens can irritate the thin eyelid skin. Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis may cause dry, scaly, itchy skin around the eyes. Hives may cause raised swelling that comes and goes. Itching with discharge, crusting, gritty discomfort, or a red eye may involve the eye surface rather than skin alone. Avoid rubbing because friction can worsen swelling and damage the skin barrier.

Stop new cosmetics and avoid eye makeup until the area settles. Rinse away a suspected irritant with clean lukewarm water, use a cool clean compress on closed lids, and wash hands before touching the area. Do not put skin creams, essential oils, or leftover eye medicines into the eye. Contact-lens wearers should remove lenses if they are uncomfortable and obtain professional advice before wearing them again. A clinician or pharmacist should approve any medicated cream or drops for this delicate site.

Arrange prompt medical review for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked redness of the eyeball, pus-like discharge, a swollen eyelid that is hot or tender, or symptoms after a chemical exposure. Emergency care is appropriate for sudden vision change, severe swelling, breathing difficulty, or facial and throat swelling. Children and contact-lens wearers should be assessed promptly when significant eye symptoms occur.

Ask whether the problem is on the eyelid skin, the eye surface, or both; which products should be stopped; and whether you need an eye examination. Mention contact lenses, cosmetics, allergies, discharge, pain, and any vision change.
