Itching Marks During Pregnancy

Marks limited to an area touched by a new detergent, lotion, fabric, or plant may suggest Contact Dermatitis. Raised areas that appear and fade can fit Hives, while dry rough patches may fit Atopic Dermatitis. Tiny intensely itchy spots, especially when household contacts itch too, need assessment for Scabies. Scratches can make any mark look more inflamed, so photographs taken before scratching can help a clinician compare changes.

Pause newly introduced fragranced products and wash clothes with a mild, unscented detergent. Keep the skin cool, use a bland moisturiser on intact skin, and choose soft loose clothing. Avoid squeezing, picking, or applying leftover prescription creams. A pharmacist or maternity clinician can review an antihistamine or topical treatment for pregnancy suitability; the right option depends on the diagnosis and the body area. Record foods, medicines, products, travel, and possible insect exposure without assuming one is responsible.

Get prompt advice if marks spread quickly, recur repeatedly, become painful, blister, ooze, or occur with fever. Emergency care is needed for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, collapse, or a rapidly worsening reaction. Contact your maternity team promptly for severe widespread itching, itching without a visible rash, or itching involving the palms or soles.

Ask whether the marks look like irritation, eczema, Hives, an infection, or an infestation; whether anyone else at home needs advice; and which cleanser, moisturiser, or medicine is appropriate during pregnancy. Show dated photographs if the marks come and go.
