Is itching a pregnancy symptom?

As the abdomen and breasts change, skin may feel tight, dry or itchy. Heat, sweating, new products and sensitive skin can add irritation. Atopic Dermatitis may flare or first become noticeable during pregnancy, and Contact Dermatitis can follow exposure to a new detergent, fragrance or fabric. A rash with raised welts may be Hives.

Intense itching without much of a rash, especially on the palms or soles or worse at night, needs prompt contact with the maternity team because it can have a liver-related cause. Itching by itself cannot confirm pregnancy and is not a reliable pregnancy test.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, keep baths and showers lukewarm, wear loose breathable clothing and avoid overheating. Pat skin dry rather than rubbing it, and keep nails short. Note the locations, timing, rash appearance and any new products or medicines.

Before using an antihistamine, steroid cream, essential oil or other treatment, check with your obstetric clinician or pharmacist because pregnancy changes which options are suitable. Do not dismiss severe or rapidly changing itch as ordinary stretching.

Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or widespread itching, itch without a visible rash, prominent night-time symptoms, or itching of the palms and soles. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, a blistering rash, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or reduced fetal movement. New symptoms after a medicine or food exposure also need prompt advice.

Ask whether you need examination or blood tests, which moisturisers and medicines are pregnancy-compatible, and what warning signs should prompt a same-day call. Mention your stage of pregnancy, rash location, night symptoms, urine or eye colour changes, and all medicines and supplements.
