Itching inside the ear

The ear canal has delicate skin that can become irritated by cotton buds, fingernails, earbuds, hearing devices, shampoo or water trapped after swimming. Flaking may point toward dryness or eczema. A rash elsewhere can fit Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis or Contact Dermatitis; discharge, increasing pain or a blocked sensation can indicate infection and needs examination.

Itching alone does not identify one cause. A clinician may inspect the canal and eardrum because creams or drops that are suitable for outer skin are not automatically safe deeper inside the ear.

Keep objects, cotton buds and home remedies out of the canal. Keep the outer ear dry, pause any newly introduced ear product, and avoid scratching. If hearing devices or earbuds seem to trigger symptoms, clean them according to their instructions and discuss fit or material irritation with a professional.

Do not place oil, steroid cream or antibiotic drops inside the ear unless a clinician has recommended that exact product. Avoid swimming until pain or discharge has been assessed.

Seek medical care for ear pain, discharge, bleeding, reduced hearing, fever, dizziness, swelling or symptoms that persist. Prompt assessment is especially important if you have diabetes, immune suppression or a recent ear procedure. A clinician can check for dermatitis, infection, wax-related irritation or a less common skin disorder such as Lichen Planus.

Ask whether the canal skin is dry, inflamed or infected, whether you should stop a device or product, and which drops are safe if treatment is needed. Tell the clinician about swimming, ear cleaning, hearing devices, allergies, discharge and any change in hearing.
