Whole-body itching during pregnancy: what to know

Dry skin, heat, stretching, and sensitivity to soaps or fabrics can cause itch with visible dryness or a rash. Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Hives, and other skin conditions may also flare during pregnancy. Intense itching on the palms or soles, itching that is worse at night, or widespread itch without a rash needs prompt maternity advice because pregnancy can affect bile flow and liver function. Itching is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and the pattern does not predict the cause by itself.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, keep showers lukewarm and brief, choose loose breathable clothing, and use cool compresses on the most uncomfortable areas. Avoid new perfumes, harsh cleansers, and scratching tools. Tell your maternity clinician where the itching is strongest, whether a rash is present, whether sleep is affected, and whether you have noticed dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing. Do not begin prescription or herbal treatment without checking pregnancy safety.

Contact your maternity team promptly for widespread or severe itching, particularly itch on the palms or soles, night-time worsening, or no visible rash. Seek urgent help for yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. Your clinician may examine the skin and arrange blood tests; report worsening symptoms even if an earlier test was reassuring.
