Whole-body itching after delivery: what to know

Skin can become dry from hormonal shifts, frequent washing, sweating, or disrupted sleep. A rash may follow pregnancy-related skin changes, contact with hospital products, dressings, adhesives, or medicines. Hives can appear as raised, migrating itchy patches. Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis may flare when the skin barrier is stressed. Itching without a rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or unusual tiredness needs medical review because it may point beyond a skin problem.

Take short lukewarm showers, apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp, and wear loose clothing. Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of vigorous scratching. Check with your clinician or pharmacist before taking an antihistamine or applying medicated cream, especially if breastfeeding or taking other medicines. Write down every new medicine, antiseptic, adhesive, detergent, and supplement used around delivery, together with when the itching began.

Seek emergency help for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering skin, or a rapidly spreading rash with illness. Contact your postpartum team urgently for fever, painful redness, pus, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe itching that prevents sleep. Arrange a routine review when symptoms continue, spread, or have no visible rash; examination and blood tests may be considered.
