Vaginal itching during pregnancy: what to know

Hormonal and skin changes can make the vulva more reactive to friction, moisture, shaving, sanitary products, or fragranced soap. Yeast infection commonly brings itching with redness and thick discharge. A bacterial or sexually transmitted infection may cause different discharge, odour, soreness, or pain and needs targeted testing. Contact Dermatitis and Atopic Dermatitis can affect the external skin. The appearance and symptoms guide diagnosis; itching itself does not identify one cause.

Rinse the external area with lukewarm water, dry by patting, and choose loose cotton underwear. Avoid douching, bubble baths, perfumed wipes, intimate deodorants, and tight clothing. Pause any newly introduced product until the cause is clearer. Arrange advice from your midwife, obstetric clinician, or doctor before using an antifungal, steroid, or other treatment, because pregnancy changes which medicines are suitable. Mention any new sexual exposure without embarrassment so testing can be chosen appropriately.

Contact your maternity team promptly if itching is severe, persists, or comes with burning urine, pelvic pain, sores, bleeding, unusual discharge, or a strong odour. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, vomiting, severe abdominal or back pain, or feeling acutely unwell. An examination and swab may be needed rather than guessing from symptoms.
