Itching around the urine opening in pregnancy

Pregnancy can make the vulval area more sensitive. Friction, sweat, scented washes, pads, or laundry products may irritate the skin. A yeast infection may cause marked itching, redness, soreness, and thick discharge. A urinary infection more often causes burning when passing urine, urgency, frequency, cloudy urine, or lower abdominal discomfort. Hives, Atopic Dermatitis, or Contact Dermatitis can affect nearby skin, but the location alone cannot distinguish these causes.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, wear loose breathable underwear, and avoid douching, perfumes, deodorants, and over-the-counter vaginal products unless your maternity clinician recommends them. Drink normally and do not delay passing urine. Contact your pregnancy-care team for advice about testing, because urine testing and an examination may be needed. Do not use leftover antibiotics or self-treat a suspected yeast infection without checking which options are suitable in pregnancy.

Seek urgent medical care for fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, blood in the urine, severe pelvic pain, or feeling very unwell. Contact your maternity team promptly for painful urination, new discharge with a strong odour, sores, bleeding, or itching that is intense or persistent. Early assessment helps separate skin irritation from urinary or vaginal infection during pregnancy.
