What should you know about itching in upper eyelid?

Eyelid skin is thin and can react to makeup, eye cream, cleanser, hair products, nail products, contact-lens solutions, or airborne allergens transferred by touch. Dryness and eczema may cause scaling or a tight feeling. Eyelid-margin inflammation can bring crusting, flakes, burning, or gritty eyes. Hives may cause short-lived swelling, while infection is more concerning when redness, warmth, tenderness, or discharge develops. Itching alone cannot identify the cause, and rubbing can damage the skin or move irritants into the eye.

Pause eye makeup, false lashes, new skincare, and fragranced products until the skin settles. Wash hands before touching the area, use a cool clean compress, and avoid rubbing. Do not place skin creams, essential oils, or household remedies in the eye. Clean contact lenses as directed and stop wearing them if the eye itself is red or painful. If symptoms continue, an eye-care professional or clinician can examine the lid margin and surface of the eye before recommending treatment.

Seek urgent help for vision change, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, pain when moving the eye, marked swelling, fever, pus, or swelling that spreads around the eye.
