As the abdomen expands, skin can feel tight, dry, or prickly. Heat, sweating, fragranced products, and rough clothing may add irritation. A visible rash can fit with eczema, contact irritation, or pregnancy-related hives. Itch that spreads beyond the abdomen, particularly to the palms or soles, or becomes severe at night may have a cause that cannot be judged from the skin alone. This symptom does not by itself show that something is wrong with the baby, yet pregnancy changes the threshold for contacting the maternity team.

Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing, choose loose cotton clothing, and keep showers lukewarm rather than hot. Pat the skin dry instead of rubbing it, and use a cool compress for short periods. Avoid new essential oils, medicated creams, or oral medicines unless your obstetric clinician or pharmacist confirms they are suitable in pregnancy. Note the onset, distribution, rash appearance, sleep disruption, and any change in urine or general wellbeing.

Contact your maternity team promptly for intense itch without a rash, itch on the palms or soles, symptoms that disturb sleep, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or reduced fetal movement. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, skin peeling, or a rapidly spreading rash. A clinician may examine you and arrange blood tests when the pattern suggests a liver-related pregnancy condition.
