What should you know about itching in right eye?

Short answer
Itching in the right eye is often linked to irritation, allergy, dryness, or inflammation, but pain, vision changes, marked redness, or discharge needs prompt medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Irritants, allergies, dryness, rubbing, and cosmetic or contact-lens exposure
- Helpful first step
- Stop suspected irritants, avoid rubbing, and use a clean cool compress
- Urgent warning signs
- Pain, vision change, strong light sensitivity, injury, chemical splash, or marked discharge
What itching in one eye can mean
One-sided itching may start after dust, smoke, cosmetics, contact with a new product, or rubbing the eye. Seasonal allergy can cause itching and watering, while dry air or prolonged screen use may leave the surface feeling gritty. A swollen or irritated eyelid can also make the eye feel itchy.
Skin conditions around the eyelids can contribute to irritation. Contact dermatitis may follow an allergen or product exposure; atopic dermatitis can affect sensitive, dry skin; and psoriasis or lichen planus may involve nearby skin. These conditions do not explain every itchy eye, so the eye itself still needs consideration. Avoid assuming that a skin rash is the cause when the eye is painful or vision is affected.
What you can do now
Do not rub or scratch the eye. Wash your hands before touching your face, pause eye makeup and new facial products, and use a clean cool compress over the closed eyelid. If a particle may have entered the eye, rinse gently with clean lukewarm water rather than trying to remove it with tweezers or a fingernail. Contact lens wearers should remove the lens and avoid wearing it again until symptoms have settled or an eye professional has advised you.
A pharmacist or clinician can help choose an appropriate lubricating or allergy treatment after asking about your symptoms and health. Do not use someone else’s eye drops, and avoid drops marketed mainly to make redness look better unless a professional recommends them.
When to seek care
Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, an eye injury, a chemical splash, a feeling that something is embedded, or rapidly increasing swelling. Get prompt assessment for thick discharge, significant redness, fever, or symptoms after wearing contact lenses. A clinician can examine the eye surface and eyelids and decide whether allergy, infection, inflammation, or another problem needs treatment.
Arrange a routine appointment if the itching keeps returning, does not improve after avoiding an obvious irritant, or is accompanied by a persistent eyelid rash. Do not delay care because only the right eye is affected; one-sided symptoms can still need examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could an allergy, dry eye, product exposure, eyelid condition, or infection explain this pattern? Should I stop contact lenses or a particular cosmetic? Which drops are suitable for me, and how should they be used? What changes in pain, discharge, swelling, or vision should prompt urgent review?

Questions people ask
Can allergies cause itching in only the right eye?
Yes. An allergen may contact one eye more than the other, although allergy often also causes watering, sneezing, or itching in both eyes.
Should I rub an itchy eye?
No. Rubbing can further irritate the eye surface and transfer particles or germs. Wash your hands and use a cool compress instead.
When is an itchy eye urgent?
Pain, vision changes, strong light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, rapidly worsening swelling, or thick discharge should be assessed promptly.
