Itching in the private area in men: what to know

Sweat, tight clothing, shaving, soaps, condoms, lubricants, and laundry products can irritate the groin or genital skin. A fungal infection often affects warm, moist skin and may cause a defined itchy rash in the groin. Yeast can affect the penis, particularly beneath the foreskin, with redness or soreness. Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, psoriasis, and other conditions can also affect this area.

Burning when urinating, penile discharge, blisters, ulcers, warts, testicular pain, or a new sexual exposure needs a clinician’s assessment; appearance alone cannot reliably identify an infection.

Wash gently with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Change out of sweaty clothing, choose breathable underwear, and avoid scratching, deodorants, antiseptics, and fragranced products. Do not apply steroid or antifungal creams inside the urethral opening or use someone else’s medicine. Avoid sexual contact if there are sores, discharge, or concern about an infection until you have medical advice.

Arrange prompt care for penile discharge, painful urination, sores, blisters, spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, or a new sexual exposure. Seek emergency help for sudden severe testicular pain, inability to pass urine, rapidly increasing swelling, or breathing difficulty with facial swelling. Make an appointment when itch persists, recurs, or does not improve after removing an obvious irritant.
