Itching in the palms and feet during pregnancy: what to know

Heat, sweating, dry skin, new footwear, soaps, and detergents can irritate hands and feet. Eczema or Contact Dermatitis may bring redness, scaling, cracking, or small blisters. Hives tend to appear as raised areas that move or fade. When palms and soles itch strongly without an obvious rash, especially at night, your maternity team may need to assess pregnancy-related liver or other medical causes.

The symptom does not identify a cause on its own. Mention whether the itch is spreading, whether anyone else at home is itchy, and whether you have noticed changes in urine, stool, or skin colour.

Report new or persistent palm-and-foot itching to your maternity clinician. While waiting for advice, apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser, keep the room cool, choose breathable socks and shoes, and use cool compresses. Avoid hot showers, fragranced products, and vigorous scratching. Check every medicine, cream, or supplement with a pregnancy-aware clinician or pharmacist before using it.

Seek prompt maternity advice for severe, widespread, or sleep-disrupting itch, particularly when there is little or no rash. Mention yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or marked tiredness. Seek urgent care for reduced fetal movement, significant abdominal pain, bleeding, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the face or tongue.

Ask whether blood tests or follow-up monitoring are needed, which soothing treatments are suitable, and what fetal-movement or maternal symptoms should trigger urgent review.
