Itching in the palm during pregnancy: what to know

Hand-washing, detergents, heat, dry air, and eczema can irritate the palm. Look for redness, scaling, cracks, blisters, or a clear link with a product. Contact Dermatitis and Atopic Dermatitis can itch and usually produce visible skin changes. Hives cause raised, transient itchy areas. A clinician may consider pregnancy-related liver or other medical causes when itching is intense, widespread, worse at night, or present without a rash.

Palm itching is not a diagnosis by itself. The timing, other body areas involved, urine or stool changes, and pregnancy stage help guide assessment.

Tell your maternity team about new or persistent palm itching, particularly if there is no rash. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after washing, choose lukewarm water, and wear gloves for wet or cleaning work. Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Do not start herbal products, antihistamines, steroid creams, or other medicines without checking pregnancy suitability with a clinician or pharmacist.

Contact your maternity clinician promptly for intense or worsening itch, itching of the soles, sleep-disrupting symptoms, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or unusual tiredness. Seek urgent pregnancy care for reduced fetal movement, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, or breathing difficulty with swelling.
