Itching in nose and eyes: what to know

Dust, pollen, mould, animal dander, smoke, and fragranced products can irritate the nose and the surface of the eyes. Allergy often causes repeated sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and clear tears. A cold may cause congestion and discomfort but is more likely to bring sore throat or feeling unwell. Itching with thick discharge, marked redness, or pain needs an examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Rubbing can worsen swelling and may scratch the eye surface. Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis may affect nearby skin, especially after a new cosmetic, cleanser, or eye product, but nose and eye itching can occur without a skin condition.

Wash your hands before touching your eyes, use a cool clean compress, and rinse the face after outdoor exposure. Saline nasal rinsing may help if performed with sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water. Avoid rubbing, smoke, and the suspected trigger. Ask a pharmacist about age-appropriate allergy treatment or lubricating eye drops; do not share drops or use someone else’s prescription.

Seek urgent care for sudden vision change, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, an eye injury, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue with breathing difficulty. Arrange a medical review for one-sided symptoms, pus-like discharge, contact-lens discomfort, recurrent episodes, or symptoms that interfere with sleep or daily activities.

Ask whether your symptoms fit allergy, infection, dry eye, or product irritation; which nasal or eye treatments suit you; and whether allergy testing or an eye examination is needed.
