Itching in my throat and coughing: what to know

Notice whether the cough is dry or brings up mucus, and whether symptoms began after dust, perfume, smoke, a new medicine, a cold, or eating. Post-nasal drainage can tickle the throat. Reflux may cause throat clearing or a cough, especially after meals or when lying down. An itchy throat alone does not identify one diagnosis.

Skin conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis do not usually explain an isolated throat cough, although an allergy can affect several body systems. A clinician can examine your throat, chest, nose, and skin if symptoms persist.

Sip water or a warm non-irritating drink, use a humidifier if the air is dry, and avoid smoke, fragrances, and other triggers. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and children over one year, but never give honey to an infant. Rest your voice and avoid lying down soon after eating if reflux seems possible. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before using cough, allergy, or reflux medicine, especially during pregnancy or for a child.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blue or grey lips, or inability to swallow saliva. Arrange prompt medical care for chest pain, coughing blood, a high fever, dehydration, wheezing, or a cough that is worsening. Book an assessment when symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, or do not settle.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, post-nasal drainage, reflux, or infection; which medicines are appropriate for your age and health; and whether your lungs, throat, or allergy triggers need assessment.
