Itching in the left eye: what to know

One-sided itching can follow dust, smoke, cosmetics, contact-lens solution, or rubbing. Allergy may cause watery eyes and sneezing; dry eye often feels gritty or burning. A red, sticky eye can occur with conjunctival infection. Itching around the eyelids may reflect contact dermatitis or eczema. The fact that only the left eye itches does not by itself show which cause is responsible, and an eye examination may be needed if it persists.

Wash your hands before touching the eye and avoid rubbing it. Remove contact lenses until the eye feels normal and use glasses instead. A cool clean compress can soothe the eyelids. Do not share towels, eye makeup, or drops, and discard eye makeup used during an episode of redness. Artificial tears may help irritation, but ask a pharmacist or eye clinician which product suits you, particularly if you wear lenses.

Arrange prompt eye care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, a scratch or chemical exposure, or a sensation that something is stuck. Seek urgent help if vision changes suddenly, the eye is severely painful, or swelling affects breathing. Contact-lens wearers should seek same-day advice for a red or painful eye because corneal problems can worsen quickly. Persistent discharge or symptoms that do not settle also warrant review.
