Itching in the Groin Area in Women

External groin skin can react to pads, liners, detergent, shaving products, lubricants, or fragranced washes. Contact Dermatitis often follows a new exposure. A Skin Yeast Infection may cause a red, irritated rash in warm folds. Atopic Dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, hives, and scabies can also affect the area. Itching with unusual discharge, odour, burning when passing urine, or internal vaginal discomfort may need assessment for a genital or urinary cause rather than skin treatment alone.

The location is useful: note whether the itch is on the pubic mound, vulval skin, inner thighs, or inside the vagina. Also note rash borders, scaling, cracks, bumps, sores, and the relation to periods, exercise, sex, hair removal, or a new product.

Clean the external skin gently and dry by patting. Avoid douching, scented wipes, deodorants, bubble bath, harsh antiseptics, and scrubbing. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change after sweating. Stop a recently introduced product until the skin settles. Keep nails short to limit damage from scratching. Avoid putting creams inside the vagina or using steroid and antifungal products without advice, especially during pregnancy or when the diagnosis is unclear.

Seek prompt care for severe swelling, fever, rapidly spreading redness, pus, significant pain, blisters, ulcers, or difficulty passing urine. Make an appointment for persistent or recurrent itch, bleeding unrelated to a period, a new lump, unusual discharge, or symptoms after a new sexual contact. Sudden severe pelvic pain needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the problem is on the skin or inside the vagina, whether testing is needed, which cleanser and treatment are suitable, and how pregnancy, diabetes, menopause, or medicines could affect the diagnosis.
