Itching in the Genital Area in Men: What to Know

The itch may affect the groin folds, penis, scrotum, or nearby skin. Sweat, friction, tight clothing, fragranced wash products, and damp skin can weaken the skin barrier. Contact dermatitis may follow exposure to soap, detergent, lubricant, or a condom material. A Skin Yeast Infection can cause an itchy, moist, red rash, while scabies often causes intense itching with small bumps and may affect household contacts. Atopic Dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, or hives can also involve genital skin. The appearance and location matter, so itching alone cannot identify the cause.

Look for scaling, a sharply defined rash, blisters, sores, discharge, swelling, or pain. A clinician may examine the skin and ask about new products, sexual contact, shaving, sweating, medicines, and symptoms elsewhere.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Change out of sweaty clothing, choose loose breathable underwear, and avoid scratching, deodorant sprays, antiseptics, and unprescribed steroid or antifungal mixtures. Pause any recently introduced product touching the area. Keep towels and underwear personal until an infection has been assessed. Do not apply a treatment inside the urethra or on broken skin unless a clinician advises it. If the itch continues, arrange an examination because the right treatment depends on whether the problem is irritation, yeast, infestation, or inflammation.

Seek prompt medical care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, pus, open sores, blisters, blood, trouble passing urine, or pain in the testicle. Arrange a visit for persistent itching, a spreading rash, recurrent symptoms, or symptoms after a new sexual contact. Urgent assessment is appropriate when swelling is sudden or the testicle is painful.
