What should you know about itchy, red eyes?

Allergy often causes itch, watering, and redness in both eyes, especially after exposure to dust, pollen, or another trigger. Dry air, smoke, screens, cosmetics, or contact lenses can irritate the eye surface. Infection may cause redness with discharge or eyelids stuck together. Eyelid skin conditions such as Contact Dermatitis or Atopic Dermatitis can add itch around the eyes, but the pattern alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.

Do not rub your eyes. Wash your hands, rinse away obvious irritants with clean water, and use a cool clean compress for comfort. Stop eye makeup and contact lenses while the eye is red or uncomfortable; do not share towels or cosmetics. Avoid using someone else's drops or leftover prescription medicine, because the wrong product can delay appropriate care.

Seek urgent eye care for moderate or severe pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, an injured eye, chemical exposure, or a red eye with severe headache or nausea. Contact a clinician for thick discharge, marked swelling, fever, symptoms in a contact-lens wearer, or redness that does not improve. Sudden facial swelling or breathing difficulty is an emergency.

Tell the clinician whether one or both eyes are affected, whether discharge or vision change is present, and what products or exposures came first. Ask which drops are suitable and when lenses or cosmetics can be resumed.
