What should you know about itching in the eyelashes?

Itch at the lash roots can accompany flaky buildup, blocked eyelid glands, dry eyes, or irritation from mascara, extensions, glue, cleanser, or contact lenses. Contact Dermatitis may affect the eyelids after exposure to a product, while Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis can involve nearby skin. Crusting, swollen lids, discharge, or lashes sticking together suggests eyelid inflammation that may need an examination. Avoid assuming the trigger from itch alone.

Stop new or recently changed eye products and do not share mascara or eye makeup. Wash hands before touching the area, use a clean warm compress over closed lids, and gently clean along the lash line without scraping. Do not pull lashes or use household oils. Pause contact lenses if the eye is uncomfortable and use glasses until symptoms settle or a clinician advises otherwise.

Get same-day eye care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, injury, or chemical exposure. Urgent help is also needed for swelling around the eye with fever or pain on moving the eye. Arrange review when itching lasts, recurs, causes lash loss, or produces persistent crusting or discharge.
