Itching during dengue treatment: safe relief and warning signs

Itching can occur as a dengue rash changes or as the skin becomes sensitive while you recover. It can also start after a new medicine, supplement, soap, or topical product. Raised patches that come and go may be [Hives](/conditions/urticaria/), while scaly or cracked areas may reflect [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/).

The timing matters: note whether the itch began before treatment, after a dose, or alongside a new rash. Itching alone cannot tell you whether dengue is improving or worsening.

Continue the dengue plan provided by your clinician and ask before changing any medicine. Use lukewarm water, a fragrance-free moisturiser, loose clothing, and cool compresses. Avoid scratching, hot showers, alcohol-based products, and unapproved herbal preparations.

Keep a list of every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, supplement, and skin product. Share it with the treating team, especially if the itch or rash follows a new dose. Do not stop essential treatment without professional advice.

Contact the treating team promptly if itching is severe, widespread, newly associated with a rash, or begins after a medicine. Get urgent help for facial or tongue swelling, wheeze, breathing difficulty, faintness, bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual drowsiness, or inability to drink.
