Short answer

Itching in both feet can result from dry skin, irritation, dermatitis, infection, or another skin condition, so the appearance and timing of the itch help guide the next step.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What itching in both feet may mean

Dry, tight, flaky skin is a frequent explanation, especially after hot showers, frequent washing, or exposure to dry air. A new soap, foot spray, detergent, shoe material, or dye can irritate both feet or trigger contact dermatitis. Eczema may cause persistent itch with scaling, cracking, or inflamed patches; asteatotic eczema is linked with very dry, fissured skin.

A warm, moist environment inside shoes can support a skin infection, which may bring peeling, soreness, or a defined rash. Psoriasis can produce thicker, sharply outlined scaly areas, while hives tend to create raised itchy welts that come and go. Scabies can cause intense itch, often worse at night, with small bumps or burrows and itching in other household members. The pattern does not identify one cause on its own.

What you can do now

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat the feet dry, including between the toes. Apply a plain moisturiser to dry areas soon after washing; avoid putting thick cream between the toes if that area stays damp. Wear clean, breathable socks and change them when wet. Rotate shoes so they can dry, and avoid scratching, fragranced products, and any recently introduced item that seems to trigger the itch.

Make a note of when the itching began, whether it is worse at night, and whether there is peeling, cracking, swelling, blisters, discharge, or a spreading rash. A clinician can use these details and an examination to decide whether you need a specific cream, an allergy-focused plan, or treatment for infection or infestation. Do not share prescription creams, and avoid using steroid cream on a suspected infection unless a clinician has advised it.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical assessment if the itch persists despite gentle skin care, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or is accompanied by a rash, scaling, cracks, or sores. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, pain, swelling, pus, rapidly spreading redness, or fever, because these can indicate a more serious skin infection. Get urgent help for sudden swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, or widespread hives.

People with diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system should have new foot symptoms assessed sooner, particularly when there is a wound or skin breakdown.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the skin changes suggest, whether a product or footwear could be contributing, and whether testing is needed. You can also ask which moisturiser or treatment is suitable for the exact location, how long to use it, and which changes should prompt a follow-up.

Questions people ask

Can dry skin cause itching in both feet?

Yes. Dryness can make the skin tight, flaky, or cracked and may improve with gentle cleansing and regular moisturising.

Does itching in both feet always mean an infection?

No. Infection is one possibility, but irritation, eczema, psoriasis, hives, scabies, and simple dryness can also affect both feet. The skin pattern and examination help separate these causes.

When is foot itching urgent?

Seek urgent help for breathing trouble or swelling of the lips or tongue. Prompt medical care is also needed for fever, pus, rapidly spreading redness, or worsening warmth and pain.
