Itching all over during dengue: what to know

Dengue can cause a changing rash and skin sensitivity as the illness develops or settles. Itching may accompany these changes, but it does not by itself show whether dengue is becoming more serious.

Follow the dengue care plan, rest, and drink fluids as advised by your clinician. Keep the skin cool, use a gentle fragrance-free moisturiser, and avoid hot showers and scratching. Do not add painkillers, anti-inflammatory medicines, antihistamines, or herbal remedies without checking that they are suitable during dengue.

Tell the treating team when the itch started, whether a rash appeared, and every medicine taken recently. Photographing a changing rash can help the clinician compare its appearance.

Seek urgent medical care for bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, marked sleepiness or restlessness, breathing difficulty, fainting, cold or clammy skin, or inability to drink. A rapidly spreading rash, facial swelling, or wheeze may signal a medicine reaction and also needs urgent help.
