What should you know about itching feet while pregnant?

Pregnancy can make skin feel dry, stretched, or more reactive to heat, sweat, footwear, and skincare products. Visible redness, scaling, or cracks may fit Contact Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema, or another skin condition. Hives, Psoriasis, Scabies, Skin Yeast Infection, and Lichen Planus are other possibilities when the examination supports them.

Pay special attention to strong itching on the soles or palms, especially when there is little or no rash, when it is worse at night, or when it is spreading. This pattern can signal intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, which requires maternity assessment and monitoring. Do not diagnose it from itch alone, and do not wait for a rash to appear before calling your maternity team.

Contact your obstetric or maternity team promptly if the itch is intense, new, or focused on the soles. Until you receive advice, use lukewarm rather than hot water, fragrance-free moisturiser on dry areas, loose breathable footwear, and cool compresses. Avoid starting oral medicines, herbal products, or medicated creams without checking pregnancy suitability. Keep a note of when the itch occurs, whether a rash is present, and any change in urine colour or stool colour.

Seek same-day maternity advice for severe or worsening itch without a clear rash, especially on the soles or palms. Ask urgently about yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash.

Ask whether liver blood tests or bile-acid testing is needed, how you should monitor fetal movement, and which relief products are suitable for your stage of pregnancy. Mention every medicine, supplement, cream, and previous pregnancy-related itch.
