Itching ears: causes and care

The outer ear can become dry or inflamed from weather, frequent washing, headphones, jewellery, hair products, or hearing-aid materials. Atopic Dermatitis and Contact Dermatitis may affect the skin around or inside the ear opening. Psoriasis can leave scaling behind the ear or in the canal. Moisture and repeated scratching can damage the protective skin and allow inflammation or infection to develop. A painful, tender canal with discharge is less consistent with simple dryness.

Other itchy skin conditions, including Asteatotic Eczema, Skin Yeast Infection, Lichen Planus, Scabies, and Hives, may sometimes involve nearby skin. The exact location and appearance matter.

Keep the outer ear clean and dry, but do not insert cotton buds, fingernails, hairpins, or other objects into the canal. Pause a new product or accessory that touches the area and note whether symptoms improve. A plain moisturiser may help dry skin on the outer ear, but keep creams out of the canal unless prescribed. After swimming, dry the outer ear gently. Do not use leftover antibiotic or antifungal drops without an examination, because the eardrum and cause need to be considered.

Arrange medical review for persistent or worsening itch, ear pain, discharge, bad smell, blocked hearing, ringing, dizziness, fever, or visible swelling. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, facial weakness, or spreading redness. People with diabetes or a weakened immune system should seek advice sooner when ear symptoms are painful or draining.
