Itching during pregnancy and liver concerns

Pregnancy can make skin drier, stretch the abdomen, or aggravate eczema and other itchy conditions. Contact with a new product may cause irritation, while hives can produce raised, changing welts. A liver-related pregnancy condition can cause marked itching without an obvious rash; scratching may create marks that hide the original pattern. It is different from a simple surface irritation and is assessed through your symptoms, examination, and clinician-directed tests.

Other possible skin causes include Asteatotic Eczema, Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Skin Yeast Infection, Lichen Planus, Psoriasis, Scabies, and Hives. These links describe conditions that can cause itching, but the presence of itching alone does not identify one diagnosis.

Contact your obstetric or maternity team and describe where the itching is strongest, when it began, whether a rash is present, and whether it disturbs sleep. Mention itching on the palms or soles, dark urine, pale stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or pain beneath the ribs. Until you receive advice, use a fragrance-free moisturiser, lukewarm rather than hot showers, loose cotton clothing, and short nails. Do not start an oral medicine, herbal product, or medicated cream in pregnancy without checking its suitability.

Seek prompt maternity advice for new or intense itching, itching that is widespread or mainly affects the palms and soles, or symptoms that are worse at night. Ask for urgent help if itching occurs with yellow skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, pale stools, significant abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. A maternity clinician can decide how quickly you need examination and monitoring.
