Itching during the first trimester of pregnancy

Short answer
Itching in the first trimester is often linked to dryness, irritation or a skin condition, but persistent or severe symptoms deserve clinical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Start with
- Fragrance-free moisturiser, cool water and breathable clothing
- Arrange advice
- Persistent, severe, widespread or sleep-disrupting itch
What may be behind it
Hormonal changes, dry skin, heat, sweat and a new soap or detergent can make skin itchy early in pregnancy. Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis and Hives may cause visible redness, bumps or patches. A yeast infection can cause irritation in warm, moist folds, while Scabies may itch intensely at night and spread among close contacts. These possibilities cannot be sorted out from the symptom alone.
Itching without a rash is less specific. Note where it occurs and whether it is worsening, rather than assuming it identifies a particular condition. Early advice is useful if the itch is affecting sleep or daily activities.
Gentle first steps
Use a fragrance-free moisturiser on damp skin, take lukewarm rather than hot showers, and wear loose breathable clothing. Stop newly introduced fragranced products and use a cool cloth instead of scratching. Do not start tablets, herbal products or medicated creams without checking their pregnancy suitability with a clinician or pharmacist.
When to arrange care
Arrange medical advice for severe, widespread, persistent or sleep-disrupting itching, a rapidly changing rash, signs of infection, or itching affecting the palms or soles. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, fever with a spreading rash, vaginal bleeding, or feeling seriously unwell. Take photographs if a rash comes and goes.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether the skin needs examination, which moisturiser or treatment is suitable, and whether any blood tests are appropriate. Mention the date it began, body sites, rash details, new products, household itching, allergies and medicines or supplements you take.

Questions people ask
Is itching in early pregnancy unusual?
It can occur for ordinary skin reasons, but persistent or severe itching should be discussed so the cause can be assessed.
Should I stop all skin products?
Avoid newly introduced or fragranced products, but keep using a bland moisturiser unless a clinician advises otherwise.
