Itching during the night in pregnancy

Short answer
Nighttime itching in pregnancy may worsen with heat, dryness or skin irritation, but intense or rash-free itching needs maternity advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Night comfort
- Cool room, breathable sleepwear and bland moisturiser
- Do not ignore
- Severe rash-free itch or palm and sole itching
Why nights can feel worse
Warm bedding, sweat, dry air and fewer distractions can make an itch more noticeable after dark. Eczema, Contact Dermatitis and Hives can cause visible irritation; Scabies often causes marked nighttime itching and may affect other people at home. Look for redness, bumps, scaling, burrows or a clear product trigger, but do not rely on appearance alone.
Pregnancy-related liver problems can cause strong itching without a rash, including on the palms or soles. Nighttime timing does not prove a cause. Record the pattern and tell your maternity team if the itch is severe or persistent.
Make the night easier
Keep the bedroom cool, choose light cotton sleepwear and use a fragrance-free moisturiser before bed. A cool damp cloth can interrupt scratching. Avoid hot showers, wool, perfumed laundry products and new skin treatments. Keep nails short and ask a pharmacist or maternity clinician before taking an itch medicine.
Get medical help
Contact maternity care promptly when itching repeatedly interrupts sleep, is widespread, has no rash, or affects the palms or soles. Seek urgent help for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, or reduced baby movements. A clinician can decide whether skin treatment, blood tests or monitoring is appropriate.
Questions to bring
Ask whether the night pattern changes the evaluation, which bedtime moisturiser is suitable, and whether household contacts should be checked. Share your sleep disruption, rash or lack of rash, affected sites, pregnancy stage, and any new detergent or medicine.

Questions people ask
Does nighttime itching automatically mean Scabies?
No. Heat, dryness, eczema and contact irritation can also worsen at night; household itching or a characteristic rash should be assessed.
When should nighttime itch be reported?
Report severe, persistent, widespread or rash-free itching, especially when palms or soles are involved.
