Itching during late pregnancy

Short answer
Late-pregnancy itching can reflect dry, stretched or irritated skin, while severe rash-free itching should be reported promptly.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Try first
- Fragrance-free moisturiser and cool compresses
- Contact promptly
- Severe itch without a rash or on palms and soles
How to interpret the pattern
Tight abdominal skin, dry air, sweat and fragranced products can all trigger itching. A rash may occur with Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis or Hives, while Psoriasis can produce thicker scaly areas. Itching between fingers or among household members raises the possibility of Scabies. These are possible causes; the appearance of the skin and your pregnancy history matter.
Itching that is widespread, strongest on the palms or soles, or present without a rash needs particular attention late in pregnancy because it can signal a pregnancy-related liver problem. The symptom does not identify the cause by itself.
Comfort measures
Moisturise with a plain fragrance-free product after a lukewarm wash. Keep nails short, wear loose breathable clothes, and use a cool cloth when the urge to scratch starts. Avoid hot water, perfumed products and unfamiliar remedies. Ask a maternity clinician or pharmacist before using a medicated cream or oral treatment.
When to contact care
Speak with your maternity team promptly if itch is severe, persistent, worsening, sleep-disrupting, rash-free, or concentrated on palms or soles. Seek urgent help for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, or reduced baby movements. Assessment may include a skin examination and blood tests.
What to ask
Ask whether your symptoms need liver testing, what skin products are suitable, and whether follow-up is needed. Describe the timing, affected areas, rash appearance, sleep impact, and any new detergent, soap or medicine.

Questions people ask
Can late-pregnancy itching be caused by products?
Yes. Soap, detergent, fragrance, heat and sweat may irritate skin, but severe or unusual itching still merits clinical advice.
Why mention itching without a rash?
Some pregnancy-related causes produce little or no visible rash, so the pattern should be discussed with maternity care.
