Short answer

Itching between toes and fingers may reflect a fungal infection, contact irritation, or dyshidrotic eczema, and a clinician can separate these overlapping patterns.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Foot care
Dry toe webs and change damp socks promptly.
Treatment choice
Antifungal and anti-inflammatory creams treat different problems.

Possible explanations

Athlete’s foot often affects the toe webs with peeling, scaling, cracking, or soggy skin and can sometimes involve the hands. Contact dermatitis may follow footwear materials, detergents, gloves, or chemicals and can burn as well as itch. Dyshidrotic eczema commonly brings very itchy, small fluid-filled blisters on the sides of fingers or toes, followed by peeling. Sweat, occlusive shoes, and repeated wet work can aggravate each pattern.

A rash on both hands and feet does not identify a single cause. The clinician may ask whether the itch began in the feet, whether nails are changing, whether anyone else is affected, and whether the skin is blistered, scaly, or macerated.

Steps that reduce irritation

Wash gently and dry carefully between every toe and finger. Change damp socks, rotate breathable footwear, and let shoes dry fully before wearing them again. Use a plain moisturizer on dry, unbroken skin, but keep toe webs dry when they are moist or macerated. Do not share towels, socks, shoes, or nail tools. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether a topical antifungal treatment fits the appearance; avoid using steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash unless directed.

When to seek medical advice

Arrange an assessment if symptoms do not settle, return after treatment, spread to the nails or hands, or make walking difficult. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, open cracks, red streaks, or fever. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, or a weakened immune system should seek advice early when foot skin is broken.

Questions for your appointment

Ask whether the appearance fits athlete’s foot, contact dermatitis, or dyshidrotic eczema; whether skin or nail testing is needed; how long treatment should continue; and how to prevent reinfection from footwear or shared surfaces.

Questions people ask

Can athlete’s foot affect the hands?

Yes. Fungal infection may spread from the feet to a hand, especially through scratching or contact with contaminated items.

What if there are tiny blisters?

Very itchy small blisters on finger or toe sides can occur with dyshidrotic eczema, but an examination is needed when the pattern is unclear.
